Spice Telecom to become Idea

I used to have 2 connections, Vodafone and Spice. I switched from Vodafone to Spice completely a year ago, when Vodafone confidently claimed that my number which I had been using since 3 years was actually registered in some Tom’s name! Moreover, Vodafone network was terrible in my locality and Spice had a good offer going on..So I jumped to Spice, and have never looked back. Contrary to what many people still believe, the network is quite good and the tariffs competitive.

Like icing on a cake, Idea acquired Spice and soon Spice is going to become Idea in Karnataka. I am sure most of you know how good Idea service is. They are the best Service providers in their regions of operation. I am happy coz my number is not going to vanish into thin air. I am looking forward for some amazing services from Idea.

I saw some tariff plans for Idea customers. I am disappointed they do not have Free SMS offers! I hope my Spice plan remains in place for the next 2 years atleast.

Surely, An Idea is going to change my life one way or the other.

This technique works on Windows XP Professional SP1 and above for sure.

If you do update your windows regularly, and are annoyed with the ‘Do you want to restart now’ prompts which keeps recurring every 20 minutes, read on.

This is a nuisance while playing games, and while watching movies (for me 🙂 )

There is a simple solution for this :

1) Go to Start –> Run

2) Type gpedit.msc . This is the Microsoft’s  group policy editor.

3) You should see a screen like the one below

Select Administrative Templates under Computer configuration then

windows components > Windows Update

In the right pane look for Re prompt for restart for scheduled installations. Double click.

In the options. Select disabled.

Now play or watch movies in peace.

Errata : Disabled prompts every 10 mins! Use enabled and make the interval 1440. Thats the maximum interval between prompts.

Piracy is a big big topic and I am not going to touch upon most parts of it. I am going to concentrate only on media piracy. Who hasn’t listened to his/her fav song by downloading it from the internet. How many of us know it is illegal?? At least in India, the number is not huge.

Recently there have been reports of police seizing illegal copies of Movie CD/DVDs and ACDs too. How does it affect a common man? Many are under the misconception that such events are the acts of the ‘evil-face’ of Technological Advancements. I beg to disagree, I concur piracy has grown tremendously in recent years, but piracy did exist in VHS days, it did exist in the ‘tape’ days (I assume ‘tape’ is out dated). We all have or at least know people who have recorded old songs aired on AIR. How come no one was opposing that time? Recording music which is played on air is as easy as clicking a button.

The main culprit behind this is actually a deep fall in prices of Hard Disks. Even though recording was an option in the earlier days, a blank cassette did not come free! So instead of cribbing about piracy and attempting to curb it. Why not think of other ways to make money?

Most of us wouldn’t care to buy an ACD anymore for more than 1 reason.

1) We don’t have enough free place to stack them.

2) We want to listen to the music before we buy, but discs are usually sealed

3) 80 bucks for 8 songs. You kidding me?

4) we will anyway rip it, so why waste a CD?

5) Environmental Hazard anyone? 😉

Most of these reasons are applicable to Movie CD/DVD as well, barring the exception of MoserBaer products whose prices are fair, reasonable and just.

No matter how advanced your security is, it can always be breached and ripped. I wonder why the industry has not learnt from the public. People who can afford to buy, will buy, other who can’t will download. There are those few budding amateurs who release their work online for free download, but you can’t do that for a living.

So what can industry do in this regard is the question of the hour. What can the industry do?

1) Organize more live shows. No matter how expensive your audio system is or how advanced your decoder is, you can never beat LIVE performances.

2) Understand regional economics. This is particularly applicable to English Films released as DVDs in India. They are priced exorbitantly high. Its always better to sell 100 DVDs at 60 each than to sell 1 at 600.. Try to price your product so that a common man can easily afford it.

3) Offer incentives for people who buy casettes/DVDs. A surprise movie ticket may be.

4) Release the audio/video online for free download after a few weeks of movie release and run ads at your website. Or may be in the movie itself (remember candyman ads in old VCDs?). This helps in preventing middlemen who pirate CDs and sell them on streets from making profit, which don’t deserve.

5) Make sure you pack some movie memorabilia with your products. People who are really interested in the movie/series would readily go for it. If the Film Industry does not change its policy against piracy, it’s destined to doom unless it answers the following million dollar question.

Why pay so much for the DVD when I can download it for free?

Comments and Suggestions welcome.

Whenever I use my pen drive in a public place like in college lab or an internet cafe and then try to use it on my computer, I will find atleast 1 virus infection, which is later dutifully cleaned by Kaspersky. Alas, it deletes the virus and leaves the autorun file as it is. You will know you have a problem when you try to open the drive contents and you are presented with a ‘open with’ window.

Solution :

1. Type WindowKey+R or go to Start -> Run

2. Type cmd and click enter

3. Identity your drive letter by looking in the explorer window

4. Type it in the command prompt e.g., j:

5. type attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf 6. del autorun.inf

7. Try opening now, if it still doesn’t work try renaming the drive name.

Hope this works..
